Ranking Players by Fantasy Baseball Category Dominance

In an effort to deliver on my 2009 personal goal to make RotoRank a more effective fantasy baseball draft guide, I plan to add two additional pieces of information to my fantasy baseball draft guide reports: Category Rank and Player Age.
|
Everyone has always been fascinated by how a player’s age may affect performance during a fantasy baseball season, so I have updated my database to show each player’s age as of February 1, 2009. Most experts seem to think that players who are between 26 to 28 years old are the most likely to have their initial breakout season, and usually good players can maintain their fantasy baseball performance level through the age of 32. Of course there are always exceptions to these general observations of a player’s age and how it affects fantasy baseball performance, so this year I’ll provide the information and you can make your own decisions during your fantasy baseball drafts.
My newest innovation for improving a RotoRank subscriber’s ability to build a great team during their fantasy baseball drafts, I have developed a new ranking system that identifies players who rank in the Top 50 in each of the ten most common rotisserie fantasy baseball scoring categories.
SHARB is the rating that the RotoRank system will use to identify the ultimate fantasy baseball hitter. A player that can produce top 50 statistics in each of the hitting categories within you league can help you build the foundation you need to take advantage of your fantasy baseball draft guide.
S = Top 50 in Stolen Bases
H = Top 50 in Home Runs
A = Top 50 in Batting Average
R = Top 50 in Runs Scored
B = Top 50 in Runs Batted In
SKEWP is the rating that the RotoRank system will use to identify the ultimate fantasy baseball pitcher. A player that can produce top 50 statistics in each of the pitching categories can allow you adjust your fantasy baseball draft strategy in response to your competitor’s strategies.
S = Top 50 in Saves
K = Top 50 in Strikeouts
E = Top 50 in Earned Run Average
W = Top 50 in Wins
P = Top 50 in WHIP
It will be extremely rare to find players that score in the top 50 in all of their possible scoring categories. Hitters have the disadvantage of competing against a large number of players who specialize in certain categories. For example, leadoff hitters will usually perform well in Batting Average, Runs and possibly Stolen Bases; however, Home Runs and RBI are not likely to be strong categories for them. Pitchers are designed to only score in four of their five rotisserie categories, so every pitcher will likely be out of the top 50 in either Wins or Saves.
The following list of 55 players reveals the fantasy baseball players that are likely to post top 50 statistics in three or more of the SHARB or SKEWP rankings.

As you can see from the above list, some of the players who score well in three category rankings do not necessarily have high fantasy baseball rotisserie rankings. With this additional information, RotoRank subscribers can select these category specialists later in their fantasy baseball draft to gain an advantage over other owners.
Another good use of the SHARB and SKEWP category rankings is that you can identify players who get a majority of their value from one category. For example, if you have a player ranked in the top 150, and they excel in the Stolen Bases or Saves, you can conclude that their value is based in performing really well in one specific category.
I am going to make every effort to include these new categories into all of my existing RotoRank Reports, but at the very least, my subscribers will be able to download an Excel Spreadsheet that contains this data.
