Is there anyone out that has problems with lopsided trades in their league? How do you fix it?

Second, we have 12 teams in our league, so how do you expand to allow new members in?

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have an article about fantasy trading:
http://www.rotorank.com/FantasyBaseball/Fantasy+Baseball+Articles/Fantasy+Baseball+Team+Management/42.aspx

Basically, you need the entire league to agree upon some kind of fair trade veto system. Using a draft guide with Auction Dollars assigned to each player could be a simple way to enforce balanced trades. For example, the total salaries exchanged between teams involved in a trade should all be within $5 of each other.

As for expansion of a keeper league, that is tough. The only completely fair solution is redrafting the entire league, but if the existing owners want to keep a core set of players, then you need to set up an expansion draft of some sort. Something like, each existing team keeps 2-3 players to start, then each expansion team can draft one player from each team until each team has lost one player, then each existing team locks up a few more players, and the process keepes repeating until each expansion team reaches their limit of keepers. Then, draft as usual. Or, you can discount the expansion team entry fees to allow them a chance to build a team from scratch with original teams allowed to keep 1 players at each position, 3 starters, and 1 closer to start.

I'm sure there are plenty of other ideas that people could suggest as well...

We've had the same problem with trades causing arguments. The solution we're trying this season is moving our trade deadline up to July 31. At that point, fewer teams will believe they're out of it and be less likely to get involved in unbalanced trades due to lack of interest or to help a buddy out.

Also, we have 4 divisions of 3 teams with 2 divisions in each league (NL & AL). When a trade is proposed, the 6 teams from the two divisions which aren't involved in the trade (or the two divisions in the other league if the teams are in the same division) vote with 3 votes killing the trade. The idea is to get the voting as far from teams directly affected by the trade to prevent self-interested voting.

We'll see how it works out.

In every league there's issues with "lopsided trades." Depending on how you're league is set up many options are avail.

1. League vote to have the trade vetoed. I know on yahoo if there's 12 teams in the league I believe you need 4 teams to veto it.

2. Seeing as though you're the commissioner I would suggest you take the 2 players in your league and appoint them to the "baseball board." You'll still have your power, but you would look to these guys on many issues from the lopsided trades, expansion, or anything else that comes up in your league. I'd also make sure that these two players are not guys who always make the lopsided trades or give you any problems. I'm sure your league has atleast two guys who get along with everyone, are active, care about the league, and would fit the role perfect. Make sure they don't have any grudges against anyone and will review everything fairly.

3. As for expansion I don't know if your league is a keeper league if so there's ways around it.

If it's a non-keeper what you'd do is at the end of the season see who finishes where and set your draft order. Now the new teams shouldn't get the advantage of coming into the league and getting the first and second pick in the draft so you could do many options. Put the ENTIRE league players into a hat and pick them out one at a time ... BUT do this. Once their name is pulled they get to choose what spot they want to draft in. This will create many different angles and more involvment for teams. You shouldn't finish last and get the first pick all the time... make an effort!

Or charge the new guys an extra $20 (keep the extra 20 in your pocket) and give them them the first/second pick in the draft haha!

If it's a keeper.... do this. EVERYONE is open in the first round of the league. Once the first round is over - have the teams who were already in the league keep their respective guys. Once that is done give the new guys a select number of teams to choose their keepers from. Then continue with the 2nd round and so on.
